Pest Control in the North West has seen a lively start this year which is very surprising given the somewhat cold (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.
Pest operatives were kept occupied with the usual town centre rats and mice infestations all thoughout the winter of course, but the relatively cold early part of the year has already brought some ant problems reported.
The fairly wet summers of the last few years were not to the taste of the hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants) but 2010 looks like it will turn out to be a active year for ant callouts.
Regularly ants nest under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to infest kitchens and food cupboards.
However it is at mating time when they can be most distressing as they produce winged males and queens which then mate on the wing.
The release of several thousands of these winged ants inside homes can be traumatic in the extreme.
A fairly new pest was especially troublesome in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last year, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was not common for pest operatives in Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire to meet these pests until recent times but they seemed to appear from nowhere in recent years and already this spring has seen sightings of these insects in substantial quantities.
Having a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, called woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do substantial damage to carpets and some fabrics. They can be a difficult and persistent pest to remove.
Those involved in pest control have noted that Bed Bugs are carrying on their resurgence in the Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire area, regularly arriving as unwanted guests in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.
Often the first reaction of those unfortunates who realise that they have been infested with these hideous,blood-sucking pests is to burn the infested beds and get.
This is often an expensive error as despite their name bed bugs not only live in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found anywhere within around five metres of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds become rapidly re-infested.
A lot of people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both take a different form of pest control.
They dine solely on blood which they drink from their sleeping victims. People often associate bed bugs with unhygienic living conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not need dirt, they eat you!
